چکیده

Imaging of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect in galaxy clusters combined with cluster plasma x-ray diagnostics can measure the cosmic distance scale to high redshift. However, projecting the inverseCompton scattering and x-ray emission along the cluster line-of-sight introduces systematic errors in the Hubble constant, H0, because the true shape of the cluster is not known. In this paper I present a study of the systematic errors in the value of H0, as determined by the x-ray and SZ properties of theoretical samples of triaxial isothermal “beta” model clusters, caused by projection effects and observer orientation relative to the model clusters’ principal axes. I calculate three estimates for H0 for each cluster, based on their large and small apparent angular core radii, and their arithmetic mean. I demonstrate that the estimates for H0 for a sample of 25 clusters have limited systematic error: the 99.7% confidence intervals for the mean estimated H0 analyzing the clusters using either their large or mean angular core radius are within ≃ 14% of the “true” (assumed) value of H0 (and enclose it), for a triaxial beta model cluster sample possessing a distribution of apparent x-ray cluster ellipticities consistent with that of observed x-ray clusters. This limit on the systematic error in H0 caused by cluster shape assumes that each sample beta model cluster has fixed shape; deviations from constant shape within the clusters may introduce additional uncertainty or bias into this result. An Unbiased Measurement of H0 through Cosmic Background Imager Observations of the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect in Nearby Galaxy Clusters

We present H0 results from Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) observations of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (SZE) in seven galaxy clusters, A85, A399, A401, A478, A754, A1651, and A2597. These observations are part of a program to study a complete, volume-limited sample of low-redshift (z < 0:1), X-ray–selected clusters. Our focus on nearby objects allows us to study a well-defined, orientation-unb...

1 A Measurement of the Hubble Constant from the X - Ray Properties and the Sunyaev - Zel ’ dovich Effect of CL 0016 + 16

A value of the Hubble constant has been determined from a comparison of the X-ray properties and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect of the distant rich cluster of galaxies CL 0016+16. The cluster, as imaged by the ROSAT PSPC, is significantly elliptical and we present the techniques we have developed to include this in our analysis. Assuming a smooth, isothermal gas distribution, we obtain a value H0 = ...

The Distance to Clusters: Correcting for Asphericity

X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect observations can be combined to measure the distance to clusters of galaxies. The Hubble constant, H0, can be inferred from the distance to low-redshift clusters. With enough clusters to measure the redshift-distance relation out to a redshift z ∼ 1, it may be possible to determine the total matter density, Ω0, and the cosmological constant, Λ0, as well. If t...

Extraction of cluster parameters with future Sunyaev-Zel’dovich observations

The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy clusters is characterised by three parameters namely: Compton parameter, electron temperature and cluster peculiar velocity. In the present study we consider the problem of extracting these parameters using multi-frequency SZ observations only. We show that there exists a parameter degeneracy which can be broken with an appropriate choice of frequenc...
